Claire's first injury

Last week Claire suffered her first injury. She just finished her last feeding before bed. She was sitting on my lap and facing me. I was holding her hands and she was standing up and pushing back and so on. Our normal pre-bedtime activity. Well she pushed herself back and then up again but she seemed to come up a bit off centered and I guess her arm twisted very slightly. I was not sure if anything happened so I just stopped and waited to see. Within a few sec she started screaming. I lifted her hand and it just dropped. She was limp. I put her lower arm under cold water and it did not help. I put her on kitchen floor and gave her a small tupperware top to hold. She would raise her hand an inch and then just drop it. At this point I knew something was wrong. I called my mom in tears. I felt so bad that she was hurrt. My mom thought she dislocated her shoulder. I called my doc and was instructed to take her to hospital. Scott was out of town so once again I head to hospital by myself :)

Anyway get there and doc said it was her elbow. She tried 3 times to pop it back in but it did not work. She took some xrays and all was good. Tried a final time to pop it in and finally it worked. Claire was screaming. I felt so bad.

She was fine after that. What she had was something called nursemaids elbow. Which comes from the old days where the nursemaids would be walking w/ the kids and sometimes have to pull them back to her by lifting up by their arms. So what happened is that the 2 bones in elbow were sitting one ontop of the other. She said this is very common in infants and toddlers since the ligaments and things are still loose.

So now we can't do certain w/ Claire for a while since this can happen again very easily. Doc said till she is like 5.
